International Studies for Sicily
International Studies for Sicily (SIS) is a non-profit, multidisciplinary institute dedicated to writing in all its forms and to philosophical, social and political research. The goal of the International Studies for Sicily is to create the ideal conditions for the residents to delve deeper into and to develop their research in a villa in the country with a limited number of colleagues or in a private apartment in Palermo, with experts in every field, both local and international, offering support. The fundamental role of SIS is to facilitate the individual research of each resident in relation to the region and to organize events such as symposia, debates, seminars and other forms of public presentations. The contributions of the residents are meant to enrich the Sicilian intellectual, cultural and academic scene, creating valuable exchange between their home countries and Sicily. SIS is an autonomous research institute, with an annual research programme, elaborated in cooperation with academic institutions, public and private agencies, local and international research centres. The intellectual exchanges developed during the residency period will help to foster existing networks, and to build new ties, both on a local and on a transnational level. Each year, SIS offers a series of residencies from April to November for scholars, academic and independent researchers, philosophers, screenwriters, playwrights, composers, curators, directors and other writers. SIS is at once a physical place and a virtual research network, through which to engage in the present armed with critical thought and political imagination.
Locations Residencies take place in two locations: Villa Adriana in Contrada Danigarci, near Trabia, and Spazio Arké in Palazzo Martinez Tagliavia Mango, adjacent to the Central Library of the Sicilian Region in the historic centre of Palermo. • Villa Adriana in Contrada Danigarci, in the municipality of Termini ImereseThe late nineteenth-century country villa is located on a hillside surrounded by an olive grove above the town of Trabia, on the Northern coast of Sicily, halfway between Palermo andCefalù and overlooks the Gulf of Palermo. The farmhouse is situated in a 15 hectares olive grove where a Certified Organic Farm currently produces Calamignara fine extra virgin olive oil. Calamignara is a variety of olive similar to Nocellara Messinese, but is indigenous to the Danigarci region. In front of the villa, the sea stretches out on the horizon lined by a row of cypress, with the Aeolian islands Alicudi, Filicudi and Panarea on the right. The island of Ustica appears on left-hand sweep of the panorama, just beyond the Gulf of Palermo. • Spazio Arké in Palazzo Martinez Tagliavia Mango, PalermoThis residency is centrally located, near the Cathedral and adjacent to the Central Library of the Sicilian Region and is suited to a writer whose research must be conducted in Palermo. According to historical sources, Antonello Gagini, the most prominent sculptor from Palermo, established his Magna Domus and his studio in this Palace in 1514. In 1657, Don Carlo Tomasi urges Don Pietro Martinez Rubio Archbishop of Palermo in his “Collibeti Teologici”, dedicated to the Archbishop, to search for the body of Saint Oliva in this Palace. An ancient legend has it that Palermo’s patron saint and protector lived and died here. Recent archaeological excavations at Spazio Arké are displayed under glass flooring illuminated through a lighting system. The apartment, located on the ground floor, can accommodate one researcher in residency and offers a conference room equipped with a projector, ideal for presentations and workshops.ProgrammeThe residency at Villa Adriana in Danigarci, shared with a total of four residents, range from one to three months, according to the needs of each candidate. In the Application Form, candidates must specify the period of their residency, as indicated in the Call for Applications. The residency at Spazio Arké of Palazzo Martinez Tagliavia Mango is ideal for a single writer whose research entails staying in close contact with the city of Palermo.
